1¢ George Washington coil stamp, Mailometer Type I

United States of America · 1908 ·

A green definitive coil stamp featuring a left-facing profile of George Washington, based on the bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon. The stamp is precanceled with the text 'ST. LOUIS, MO.' between two horizontal lines.

This stamp is part of the Washington-Franklin series, the first definitive series to be issued in coil format for use in private vending and affixing machines. The precancel indicates it was sold to a bulk mailer in St. Louis for dispatching large quantities of mail.
