George Washington 2-cent Stamp with Molly Pitcher Overprint
United States · 1928 · 2 cents
A 2-cent carmine red stamp featuring a profile portrait of George Washington, overprinted with the words 'MOLLY PITCHER' and 'BATTLE OF MONMOUTH' in two lines. This overprint was applied to the regular issue Washington-Franklin stamp.
The overprint commemorates Molly Pitcher, a legendary figure who brought water to soldiers and took her husband's place at a cannon during the Battle of Monmouth in 1778, a pivotal engagement of the American Revolutionary War. The stamp was issued for the 150th anniversary of the battle.
