A 25 cents revenue stamp featuring a portrait of George Washington, issued in 1862 as a perforated variety for certificates.
Issued during the American Civil War (1861-1865) as part of the 'First Issue' revenue stamps, these were used to help fund the Union war effort. This example bears an uncommon handstamp cancellation dated April 9, 1867.
