This stamp features the 'Pine Tree Flag', also known as the 'Washington's Cruisers' flag, which displays a pine tree on a white field with the motto 'AN APPEAL TO HEAVEN'. It was one of the first flags used by the Continental Navy during the American Revolutionary War.
Issued to commemorate American flags, this stamp honors one of the earliest naval ensigns of the United States, flown by cruisers commissioned by George Washington in 1775.
