United States 1908 2c Washington Imperforate Coil
United States · 1908 · 2c
This definitive stamp features a portrait of the first U.S. President, George Washington, based on the bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon. Issued as an imperforate coil, it was intended for use in private vending and affixing machines which would apply their own perforations or cuts. The design is a classic example of early 20th-century American philately.
Produced during a period of experimentation with stamp formats, these imperforate coils were a response to the growing demand for automated stamp dispensing in businesses and post offices.
