Abraham Lincoln, 6c Carmine, 1870 National Bank Note Co. Issue

United States · 1870 · 6c

This stamp features a left-facing bust of Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States. The portrait is based on a photograph by Mathew Brady. The design is enclosed in an ornate, shield-like frame with the denomination 'SIX CENTS' at the bottom.

Issued as part of the 1870-71 National Bank Note Company series, this was the first regular issue to feature Abraham Lincoln following his assassination. This series replaced the 1869 pictorials, which were unpopular with the public.
