This definitive stamp features a portrait of Queen Victoria, common to many British colonial issues of the era. It is a "key plate" design, where the central vignette of the monarch was printed in one color (black) and the frame with the country name and denomination was printed separately in a different color (carmine).

Issued under the Uganda Protectorate, this stamp reflects the height of the British Empire's influence in East Africa during the late Victorian era. The dual-currency system of annas and rupees was used in British East Africa at the time.
