Neptune's Trident, Overprinted

Ukraine · 1918 · 35 Russian kopecks

This stamp features a black trident overprint on a 35-kopeck Russian Imperial Arms stamp. The trident, or Tryzub, is the national coat of arms of Ukraine. This overprint was applied to existing Russian stamps to create the first postage for the newly independent Ukrainian People's Republic.

Issued in 1918, these stamps mark the brief period of Ukrainian independence following the collapse of the Russian Empire and before the country was absorbed into the Soviet Union.
