Western Ukraine 1918 Overprint on Austrian Stamp

Western Ukrainian People's Republic · 1918 · 3 Heller

This stamp is an Austrian definitive from the 'Crown and Posthorn' series, overprinted in Lviv with the Ukrainian Trident (Tryzub) coat of arms. The overprint signifies the establishment of the Western Ukrainian People's Republic following the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. These provisional issues were necessary to establish a postal service for the new state.

Issued in November 1918, these stamps mark the brief period of independence for the Western Ukrainian People's Republic before it was absorbed into Poland in 1919.
