Ukraine 50 Karbovanetsiv on 50 Kopecks Trident Overprint
Ukraine · 1992 · 50 Karbovanetsiv on 50 Kopecks
This provisional stamp features a black trident, the coat of arms of Ukraine, overprinted on a Soviet definitive stamp from 1989. The original 50 Kopeck stamp depicted a stylized representation of the Kremlin's Spasskaya Tower. The overprint revalued the stamp to 50 Karbovanetsiv for use in newly independent Ukraine.
Issued in 1992, this stamp is part of the first series released by Ukraine following its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. These provisional overprints were a necessary measure to adapt existing Soviet stamp stocks for the new national postal system and currency.
