Japanese Chrysanthemum Seal Overprinted for Taiwan

Taiwan (Japanese Occupation) · 1895 · 3 Sen

This stamp is a Japanese definitive issue featuring the Imperial Chrysanthemum Seal, overprinted in black with the characters '台湾' (Taiwan) for use on the island. The overprint signifies the transfer of postal authority following the Treaty of Shimonoseki. This was the first stamp issued under the new Japanese administration.

Issued in 1895, this stamp marks the beginning of 50 years of Japanese rule over Taiwan, which was ceded by Qing China to Japan after the First Sino-Japanese War.
