China Large Dragon 1 candarin
China · 1878 · 1 candarin
This stamp, known as the 'Large Dragon', is the first postage stamp ever issued by China. The design features a prominent dragon, a powerful symbol in Chinese culture, set against a background of clouds and water. It was printed in Shanghai by the Customs Statistical Department of the Inspectorate General of Customs.
Issued by the Qing Dynasty, the Large Dragons marked China's entry into the global postal system, replacing the older customs and private mail systems for international correspondence.
