Toughra of Sultan Abdülaziz, First Issue
Turkey · 1863 · 20 Paras
This stamp features the Toughra, an intricate calligraphic monogram of the reigning Ottoman Sultan, Abdülaziz. The design is framed by a crescent moon, a prominent symbol of the Ottoman Empire, with the denomination inscribed below. This was the first adhesive postage stamp issued for use throughout the Ottoman Empire.
Issued during the Tanzimat reform period, these stamps marked the modernization of the Ottoman postal system, replacing a complex system of couriers and tax seals with a standardized, prepaid postage system.
