Turkey 1920 Anatolia Government Issue, Surcharge on Ottoman Empire Stamp

Turkey · 1920 · 10 Para

This stamp is a provisional issue from the Turkish Nationalist government in Anatolia. It features a black handstamped overprint on a 10 Para stamp of the Ottoman Empire (Scott #266), which depicts the tughra of Sultan Mehmed V. The overprint signifies the authority of the new government during the Turkish War of Independence.

Issued in 1920 by the Grand National Assembly government based in Ankara, these stamps were created out of necessity during the Turkish War of Independence (1919-1923) by overprinting existing Ottoman postage.
