King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) Portrait

Thailand · 1905 · 1 Att

This definitive stamp features a left-facing portrait of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) of Siam. The design is enclosed within an ornate oval frame, with the denomination '1 ATT' at the bottom and Siamese script at the top. This series, known as the 'Wat Arun' or 'Recess Printed' series, was the first to be printed by Giesecke & Devrient in Leipzig, Germany.

Issued during the reign of King Chulalongkorn, a monarch renowned for modernizing Siam and maintaining its independence during a period of intense colonial pressure in Southeast Asia. This series replaced earlier issues and was widely used for postage.
