Slovenia Chainbreaker, Verigar Issue
Slovenia · 1919 · 3 vinarjev
This stamp, known as the "Verigar" or "Chainbreaker," is one of the most iconic issues of Slovenia. The design by Ivan Vavpotič features an allegorical figure of a man breaking the chains of slavery, symbolizing Slovenia's liberation from Austro-Hungarian rule. In the background, the rising sun over the Julian Alps represents the dawn of a new nation.
Issued in January 1919, these were the first stamps of the State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs, which had just declared independence from the Austro-Hungarian Empire at the end of World War I. They represent a powerful statement of national identity and freedom.
