Sudan 1897 Camel Postman

Sudan · 1897 · 1m

This stamp, the first issued by Anglo-Egyptian Sudan, features a classic and iconic design of a postman riding a camel through the desert. The design, created by Captain E. A. Stanton, was intended to be easily recognizable and symbolic of the region's primary mode of mail transport. The inscription reads "SOUDAN" at the top and includes the denomination in both English and Arabic script.

Issued in 1897 during the Anglo-Egyptian Condominium, this stamp represents the establishment of a formal postal system under joint British and Egyptian rule following the Mahdist War. The 'Camel Postman' design became a long-running definitive series for Sudan.
