General Gordon, Camel Postman
Sudan · 1898 · 10 Piastres
This iconic stamp, often called the 'Camel Postman', depicts a mail carrier riding a camel through the desert. The design was created by Captain E. A. Stanton based on a sketch of a postman named Bakhit, symbolizing the vital role of camel post in the vast Sudanese territory. The stamp is part of the first definitive series issued under the Anglo-Egyptian administration.
Issued following the reconquest of Sudan by Anglo-Egyptian forces, this series replaced the overprinted Egyptian stamps and established a new postal identity for the condominium.
