First Definitive Issue of the USSR (Gold Standard)
Soviet Union · 1923 · 1 Kopek
This stamp, part of the first definitive series of the USSR, features a powerful allegorical design of a worker sowing seeds in a field. The imagery symbolizes the new beginnings and agricultural focus of the Soviet state. The design was created by Ivan Shadr and is often referred to as 'The Sower'.
Issued in October 1923, this series was the first to bear the inscription 'Почта СССР' (Post of the USSR) and was based on the gold standard to stabilize the currency after years of hyperinflation following the revolution and civil war.
