Tiflis Unique, First Stamp of the Russian Empire
Russian Empire · 1857 · 6 Kopecks
The stamp features an embossed design of the coat of arms of Tiflis (modern-day Tbilisi, Georgia) at its center, which includes St. George slaying the dragon, surrounded by the imperial Russian double-headed eagle. The denomination "6 KOП" is embossed below the central emblem. Its simple, unperforated, and embossed design is characteristic of very early postal issues.
Issued for the Tiflis city post, this is considered the first postage stamp issued within the Russian Empire, predating the first general issue for the entire empire by several months. It was used for local mail in Tiflis and Kojori.
