Tiflis Unique
Russia · 1857 · 6 Kopecks
The Tiflis Unique is one of the earliest and most famous Russian philatelic items. Issued for the Tiflis (now Tbilisi, Georgia) city post, it features an embossed design of the city's coat of arms, which includes an eagle with outstretched wings, on yellowish paper. This stamp predates the first official postage stamps of the Russian Empire.
Issued in 1857, this local post stamp was created for mail service within Tiflis and its vicinity, just before the Russian Empire introduced its first nationwide stamps in December of that year.
