Romania 1856 'Timbru Domnesc' 20 Parale Revenue Stamp
Romania · 1856 · 20 Parale
This is a 'Timbru Domnesc' (Lordly Stamp), a 20 parale black revenue or tax stamp from the Principality of Moldavia. The design features the iconic Bull's Head with a star between its horns, the coat of arms of Moldavia, which was also used on the first postage stamps of Romania two years later. This stamp is shown used on a document, as was its intended purpose.
Issued in the Principality of Moldavia before its unification with Wallachia to form Romania, this fiscal stamp is a direct precursor to the famous 'Cap de Bour' (Bull's Head) postage stamps of 1858.
