The design, created by Constantino de Sobral Fernandes, shows Ceres standing with a sickle and a sheaf of wheat, symbolizing Portugal's agricultural wealth. This was the first definitive stamp series issued by the First Portuguese Republic.
Issued shortly after the 1910 revolution that overthrew the monarchy, the Ceres series replaced stamps featuring the king's portrait, marking a significant symbolic shift for the new Portuguese Republic.
