Portugal Ceres, 1912-1924 Definitive Series

Portugal · 1912 · Various

This definitive series features an allegorical depiction of Ceres, the Roman goddess of agriculture, grain, and fertility. The design, created by Constantino de Sobral Fernandes, symbolized the agricultural foundation of the newly established Portuguese Republic. The series was printed over many years with numerous color and paper variations.

Issued shortly after the 1910 revolution that established the First Portuguese Republic, the Ceres series replaced stamps bearing the portrait of the deposed monarch, King Manuel II, becoming a powerful symbol of the new republican era.
