Portugal, Horta, King Carlos I Definitive

Horta (Portuguese Azores) · 1892 · 5r

This definitive stamp features a portrait of King Carlos I of Portugal, facing left, within an ornate oval frame. The stamp is inscribed 'HORTA' at the top and 'PORTUGAL' and 'CONTINENTE' at the bottom, with the denomination '5 REIS' split across the lower corners. This was the first stamp issued specifically for use in the Horta district of the Azores.

Issued in 1892, this stamp was part of a series overprinted for use in the various administrative districts of the Azores, reflecting Portugal's colonial administration during the late 19th-century monarchy.
