Ceres, First Republic Issue

Portugal · 1912 · 1c

This stamp features an allegorical depiction of Ceres, the Roman goddess of agriculture, grain, and fertility. She is shown holding a sickle and a sheaf of wheat, symbolizing Portugal's agricultural heritage. This design, created by Constantino de Sobral Fernandes, was the first definitive series issued after the establishment of the Portuguese Republic in 1910.

Issued shortly after the 1910 revolution that overthrew the monarchy, the Ceres series represented a new republican identity for Portugal, replacing royal portraits with classical and national symbols.
