Ceres 1 Escudo, Inverted Center
Portugal · 1912 · 1 Escudo
This definitive stamp features an allegorical depiction of Ceres, the Roman goddess of agriculture, grain, and fertility. The design, created by Constantino de Sobral Fernandes, shows Ceres holding a sickle and a sheaf of wheat. This particular stamp is a famous error variety where the central vignette of Ceres is printed upside down in relation to the surrounding frame.
Issued during the First Portuguese Republic, the Ceres series replaced stamps bearing the portrait of the deposed King Manuel II. This error stamp is one of the most significant rarities in Portuguese philately.
