Portugal Colonies, Ceres Issue
Portugal · 1912 · Various
This stamp is part of the first definitive series issued for all Portuguese colonies, known as the Ceres issue. The design features an allegorical representation of Ceres, the Roman goddess of agriculture, grain, and fertility, symbolizing the agricultural wealth of the colonies. The design was created by Constantino de Sobral Fernandes and engraved by Arnoldo Fragoso.
Issued following the 1910 revolution that established the First Portuguese Republic, this series replaced stamps bearing the portrait of the deposed king. The unified design was overprinted with the name of each specific colony.
