Horta, Portugal - Ceres Issue

Portugal · 1912 · 2½c

This stamp features the classic 'Ceres' design, an allegorical representation of the Roman goddess of agriculture, grain crops, fertility, and motherly relationships. The design, originally created for mainland Portugal, was widely overprinted for use in its various colonies and districts, in this case for Horta in the Azores.

Following the 1910 revolution that established the First Portuguese Republic, new postage stamps were needed to replace those with the king's portrait. The Ceres design became the definitive series for Portugal and its territories for many years.
