Portugal 1910 Ceres Overprinted "REPUBLICA"
Portugal · 1910 · 2½ Réis
This stamp is an overprint on the 1898 King Carlos I issue. The original design features Ceres, the Roman goddess of agriculture, holding a sickle and a sheaf of wheat. Following the revolution, the stamp was overprinted diagonally with the word "REPUBLICA" in red to validate it for use under the new government.
Issued immediately after the 5 October 1910 revolution which overthrew the monarchy and established the First Portuguese Republic, these overprinted stamps were a provisional measure to adapt existing monarchist postage for the new republican era.
