Peru 1860 Coat of Arms, 1 Dinero
Peru · 1860 · 1 Dinero
This stamp features the Peruvian coat of arms, which is divided into three fields. The top left shows a vicuña, the national animal; the top right a cinchona tree, the source of quinine; and the bottom a cornucopia overflowing with coins, representing mineral wealth. The design is framed by an ornate border with the denomination 'UN DINERO' at the bottom.
Issued in 1860, this was part of Peru's third series of postage stamps, replacing the earlier 'Peseta' denomination with the 'Dinero'. These stamps were engraved and printed by the American Bank Note Company in New York.
