Peru 1880 Postage Due Stamp

Peru · 1880 · 1c

This is the first postage due stamp issued by Peru. The design features a large numeral '1' indicating the one centavo value, enclosed within an ornate, engine-turned oval frame. The words 'PERU' and 'DEFICIT' are inscribed at the top and bottom respectively, with 'UN CENTAVO' below the numeral.

Issued in 1880, these stamps were used to collect insufficient postage from the recipient of a letter. This series marks the beginning of Peru's formal system for handling postage due mail.
