Panama-Pacific Exposition Issue: Vasco Núñez de Balboa
United States · 1913 · 1¢
This green one-cent stamp features a portrait of Vasco Núñez de Balboa, the Spanish explorer credited as the first European to see the Pacific Ocean from the New World. The design is framed by ornate scrollwork, with 'U.S. POSTAGE' at the top and 'PANAMA-PACIFIC 1¢' at the bottom. It was part of a set of four stamps issued to commemorate the Panama-Pacific International Exposition.
Issued to celebrate the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco, this series commemorated both the opening of the Panama Canal and the 400th anniversary of Balboa's discovery of the Pacific Ocean.
