New Zealand Queen Victoria 'Chalon Head' Full Face
New Zealand · 1855 · 1d
This stamp features the 'Chalon Head' portrait of Queen Victoria, based on a painting by Alfred Edward Chalon. The design shows the Queen in her coronation robes, facing forward, a portrait she reportedly favored. It was printed in a dull orange-red color on blued, unwatermarked paper.
This was the first postage stamp issued by the Colony of New Zealand, printed in London by Perkins Bacon. It marked the beginning of New Zealand's postal independence and is a classic from the British Empire.
