Netherlands 1940 'Seagull' Definitive

Netherlands · 1940 · 7 1/2c

This definitive stamp features a simple yet elegant design of a seagull in flight over stylized waves. The design, created by Pyke Koch, was part of a new series intended to replace the previous Queen Wilhelmina issues. The clean lines and focus on a natural element represented a modern aesthetic for Dutch postage.

Issued in May 1940, this series was released just as Germany invaded the Netherlands during World War II. The stamps were in use during the subsequent German occupation.
