Southern Nigeria 1901 Queen Victoria Definitive
Southern Nigeria · 1901 · 1d
This definitive stamp features a diademed portrait of Queen Victoria, facing left, within an ornate oval frame. The design is inscribed 'SOUTHERN NIGERIA' at the top and 'POSTAGE & REVENUE' at the bottom, with the denomination 'ONE PENNY' below the portrait. This was part of the first stamp series issued for the newly formed Protectorate of Southern Nigeria.
Issued shortly after the death of Queen Victoria in January 1901, this series was the first for the Protectorate of Southern Nigeria, which was established in 1900 by uniting the Niger Coast Protectorate with territories from the Royal Niger Company.
