Nigeria King George V Definitives
Nigeria · 1914 · 1/2d to £1
This definitive series features a three-quarter portrait of King George V, facing left, set within an ornate frame. The design, known as the 'Downey Head' profile, was common across the British Empire. The country name 'NIGERIA' is inscribed at the top, with 'POSTAGE & REVENUE' below the portrait and the denomination at the bottom.
Issued in 1914, this was the first postage stamp series for the newly unified Colony and Protectorate of Nigeria, which was formed by the amalgamation of the Northern and Southern Nigeria Protectorates in the same year.
