Mauritius "Post Office" 1d and 2d
Mauritius · 1847 · 1d Red & 2d Blue
The Mauritius "Post Office" issue features a profile of Queen Victoria, based on the 1840 Great Britain stamps. The design is simple, with the words "POST OFFICE" on the left, "POSTAGE" at the top, and the denomination ("ONE PENNY" or "TWO PENCE") at the bottom. These were the first stamps issued in any British colony.
Issued in 1847 for a ball hosted by the Governor's wife, these stamps are legendary in philately. The inscription "Post Office" was changed to "Post Paid" on subsequent printings, making the originals exceedingly rare.
