Malta 1918 War Tax Overprint Set
Malta · 1918 · 1/2d & 3d
This set consists of two definitive stamps from the King George V era overprinted with 'WAR TAX' in black. The halfpenny stamp features the head of King George V, while the threepence stamp depicts the Grand Harbour of Valletta. The overprint was a common measure in British colonies to raise funds for the war effort.
Issued towards the end of World War I, these stamps reflect the financial measures taken by the British Empire to fund its military campaigns. Malta, as a key naval base and hospital center, played a significant role in the Mediterranean theater of the war.
