Montenegro Prince Nicholas I Definitive Issue
Montenegro · 1874 · 2 novčića
This stamp features a right-facing portrait of Prince Nicholas I of Montenegro, who reigned from 1860 to 1918. The design is simple, with the portrait enclosed in an oval frame, the country's name 'ЦРНА ГОРА' (CRNA GORA) in Cyrillic script at the top, and the denomination '2 НОВЧИЋА' (2 NOVČIĆA) at the bottom. This was the first postage stamp issued by the Principality of Montenegro.
Issued in 1874, this stamp marks Montenegro's entry into the Universal Postal Union and the establishment of its independent postal service, a significant step in asserting its sovereignty within the Ottoman-dominated Balkans.
