Latvia Map and Coat of Arms
Latvia · 1919 · 5 Kapeikas
This set features a map of Latvia with its three historical regions (Kurzeme, Vidzeme, Latgale) represented by stars, all under a rising sun symbolizing the new nation. The design, created by Ansis Cīrulis, was one of the first issues of the newly independent Republic of Latvia. The stamps were printed on the back of unfinished German military maps due to a severe paper shortage following World War I.
Issued in 1919, these stamps mark Latvia's declaration of independence on November 18, 1918, after the end of World War I. The use of German military maps for printing highlights the resourcefulness and challenges faced by the fledgling nation.
