Luxembourg 1859 Coat of Arms

Luxembourg · 1859 · 10c

This stamp features the coat of arms of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, a design that would be used for several decades. The central element is the crowned shield with the rampant lion, a symbol of the House of Luxembourg. The denomination '10 CENTIMES' is inscribed below, and 'GRAND-DUCHE DE LUXEMBOURG' is arched above.

This was the first postage stamp issued by Luxembourg, marking its entry into the Universal Postal Union and the standardization of its postal services. The design was created by the engraver Jacques Wiener.
