Central Lithuania 1920 Overprinted Stamps

Central Lithuania · 1920 · Various

This stamp is part of the first issues for the short-lived Republic of Central Lithuania. Existing Lithuanian stamps, featuring the 'Vytis' (White Knight) coat of arms, were overprinted with 'SRODKOWA LITWA' and the Polish eagle. These overprints signify the Polish-backed administration's control over the Vilnius region.

The Republic of Central Lithuania was a short-lived political entity established in 1920 after a Polish-led mutiny, existing for only 18 months before its annexation by Poland in 1922. These stamps are postal artifacts from this contentious period in Lithuanian-Polish history.
