Lithuania 1933 Airmail Set, Darius and Girėnas Flight
Lithuania · 1933 · Various (10c to 1L)
This set of six airmail stamps commemorates the transatlantic flight of Lithuanian-American pilots Steponas Darius and Stasys Girėnas. The designs feature portraits of the two aviators, their aircraft the 'Lituanica', and a map showing their intended flight path from New York to Kaunas. The stamps were issued to honor their heroic, though ultimately tragic, attempt to cross the Atlantic.
Issued in 1933, these stamps celebrate a significant event in Lithuanian national pride. Although Darius and Girėnas crashed just short of their destination, their flight was a major achievement in aviation history and they became national heroes in Lithuania.
