Central Lithuania 1920 25 Fenigų Overprint on Lithuania
Central Lithuania · 1920 · 25 Fenigų
This stamp features a black overprint 'Litwa Środkowa' and a new denomination of '25 Fen.' on a 1919 Lithuanian stamp. The underlying design shows the Vytis, or White Knight, the national coat of arms of Lithuania, a symbol of the historical Grand Duchy of Lithuania.
Issued in October 1920 for the short-lived Republic of Central Lithuania, a puppet state created after a Polish-led mutiny captured Vilnius. These overprinted stamps were used for postage in the territory for about 18 months before its annexation by Poland.
