This set of four stamps commemorates the reunification of Vilnius with Lithuania in 1939 and the 20th anniversary of Lithuanian independence (1918-1938). Two stamps depict a group of historical figures, while the other two feature a portrait of President Antanas Smetona against a backdrop of Vilnius.

Vilnius, the historical capital of Lithuania, was under Polish control between 1920 and 1939. Its return to Lithuania in October 1939 was a significant national event, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of the re-establishment of Lithuanian independence.
