Ceylon Queen Victoria 4 Pence Rose
Ceylon · 1857 · 4d (Four Pence)
This stamp features a left-facing portrait of a young Queen Victoria, known as the 'Chalon Head' design, based on a portrait by Alfred Edward Chalon. The denomination 'FOUR PENCE' is inscribed at the bottom, with 'CEYLON' and 'POSTAGE' in arcs around the central vignette. The design is enclosed within an unwatermarked, imperforate sheet.
This was part of Ceylon's first issue of postage stamps, released in 1857 when the island was a British Crown Colony. The 4d value was intended for the inland letter rate.
