This stamp is part of the first-ever postage stamp series issued by the Kingdom of Laos. The design features a portrait of King Sisavang Vong, who was the ruler of the Kingdom of Luang Phrabang and later the unified Kingdom of Laos. The stamp is inscribed 'ROYAUME DU LAOS' (Kingdom of Laos) and 'POSTES'.

Issued in 1951, this series marks Laos's entry into the Universal Postal Union and its philatelic independence as an Associated State within the French Union, following the Franco-Lao Treaty of 1949.
