First Provisional Postal Issue
South Korea · 1946 · 50 Chon
This stamp is part of South Korea's first provisional issue following liberation. It features an overprint on a pre-existing Japanese stamp (Scott #340), which depicts a lumberjack. The overprint consists of the Korean name for the post office, '조선우표' (Joseon Upyo), and the new denomination of '50 Chon' in black.
Issued shortly after the end of Japanese occupation in 1945, these provisional stamps were a necessary measure to establish a new Korean postal system before new national stamps could be designed and printed.
