Cambodia 1955 Birth of Buddha Semi-Postal Stamps
Cambodia · 1955 · 1p+50c, 2p+1p, 3p+1.50p
This set of three semi-postal stamps commemorates the 2500th anniversary of the birth of Buddha. Each stamp features a different artistic depiction related to the event: B5 shows a bas-relief of the Nativity from the Banteay Srei temple, B6 portrays a statue of the infant Buddha, and B7 depicts a statue of Queen Maya giving birth. The stamps include a surcharge, with the additional funds raised designated for charitable purposes.
Issued in 1955, this set reflects the deep cultural and religious significance of Buddhism in Cambodia, which had recently gained full independence from France in 1953. The surtax on these stamps was intended to support social welfare initiatives in the young nation.
